Do You Have a Favorite Song?

by Dr. Punita Rice Miscellaneous

Do you have a favorite song? I have a lot of favorites, and don’t think I could pick just one, but if I had to, it might be Instinct by Karsh Kale. In college, I convinced myself that this song was the theme song to my life. Here are some of my favorites…

Here are some of mine…

Curs in the Weeds by Horse Feathers (I’m not sure what the song is about entirely, and the lyrics seem open to interpretation; is it about a Father & Son? Or is it about The Father and son? Maybe it’s about love; loss? Or maybe it’s just that the song just sounds really nice and transports me to a more peaceful, bucolic state of mind.)

Easy by Anoushka Shankar & Karsh Kale, Vocals by Norah Jones (Did you know Anoushka Shankar & Norah Jones are sisters? And the daughters of Ravi Shankar? What a talented family).

Change [in the House of Flies] by Deftones (this one takes me back to listening to the radio at night before bed).

Cosmic Love by Florence + the Machine (also, did you ever read Stephanie Meyer’s “Midnight Sun?” If you’re not familiar, or you’re not 12, it’s Stephanie Meyer’s unpublished manuscript that tells the entire story of “Twilight” from Edward’s perspective. Well, in it, Edward says that without Bella, his world would forever be dimmed. His reasoning is that Bella is like a bright star streaking across his sky. So without her, his world would be forever dimmed because her light blinded him. Or something to that effect. It’s been a while. Anyway, this song always makes me think of that.)

Rolling Stone by The Weeknd (The acoustic guitar and drum loop running through this entire song, and The Weeknd’s voice!)

Don’t Look Back by Telepopmusik (are those synth pads? Does someone better versed in this kind of electronic music know what it is? I want to go to there).

Retrograde by James Blake… and Life Round Here by James Blake actually (oh! And the amazing cover by Sid Sriram!)

California Love by Tupac, featuring Dr. Dre

I used to find a lot of my favorite songs from movies or tv shows I was watching (Grey’s Anatomy in particular used to lead me to a lot of great music). But I’m not sure where all of these songs came from.

Do you have a favorite song? If not, what are some of your favorite songs? And how did you find them?

P.S. Music that makes you cry, and music for concentrating
